Exploring memory through film, archival materials and text.
Following appearances at The Moth Mainstage at New York’s Lincoln Center, San Francisco’s Herbst Theater and several other cities, my story about exploring my southern roots will air on The Moth Radio Hour on public radio beginning Tuesday, October 1 and on their podcast beginning Tuesday, October 7. I will be talking about the story behind the video essay The Call – the discovery and exploration of the lives of my enslaved ancestors in Kentucky. The episode also includes an interview between me and my director Meg Bowles.
I am also honored to be part of a group of performers included in a video by artist Izidora Leber LETHE for her solo exhibition Peristyle currently running at the Contemporary Jewish Museum in San Francisco through January 19, 2020.
A video essay inspired by Berea, Kentucky, a town and liberal arts college in central Kentucky lying at the gateway of the Appalachian Mountains. Founded in 1855 by abolitionist John Gregg Fee, the school admitted both black and white students in a fully integrated curriculum, making it the first non-segregated, co-educational college in the South. In this video I explore my family ties to this community's roots and the process of recovering memories. Below is a preview.
